Women of War

Brutal wars and ethnic cleansing campaigns have led to frequent and systematic violations of international humanitarian law. As a result, women are the most persecuted, stigmatised, and exposed group to the horrors of war and conflict. In fact, women and girls are paying the highest price, facing systematic violence and oppression, which can have life-long repercussions for survivors, and devastate their physical, psychological, economic, and social security. However, the difficulties women face in war can lead to resistance, from direct confrontation of the military, to championing civil movements. War can also provide unexpected opportunities for women to become the main contributors in serving society, and eventually play crucial roles in efforts to rebuild divided societies and reform governments.
