TRT World Citizen Awards 2019




Here are the educators, activists, adults and children who have risen up against adversity, and were honoured at the TRT World Citizen Awards. Aadel Haleem attended the award night and brought the highlights.

Lifetime Achievement Awardee
Yusuf Islam (Cat Stevens)

The TRT World Citizen 2019 Lifetime Achievement Award goes to Yusuf / Cat Stevens for inspiring people worldwide through his service to humanity for almost 50 years

Youth Awardee
Reyhan Jamalova

Reyhan Jamalova received the Youth Award for inventing an electricity-producing system (Rainergy) using rainwater at only 15 years of age.

Educator Awardee
Hawa Aden Mohamed

“Mama” Hawa Aden Mohamed received the TRT World Citizen Educator Award for more than 20 years of inspiring work to empower Somali refugee women and improve their lives.

World Citizen of the Year Awardee
Abdulaziz Wahabzadeh

On March 15, at least 50 Muslims were killed and scores injured when a terrorist shot worshippers in cold blood at two mosques in New Zealand.

Communicator Awardee
Ahmad Abu Retaime

The Communicator Award went to writer and poet Ahmed Abu Retaima for sparking and organizing Gaza’s Great March of Return via social media.

Women of War
Fatemah Alabad

Fatemah Alabad was named for the Women of War award for guiding her daughter Bana to convey the tragedies experienced by people in Aleppo, Syria to the rest of the world.
